back in austin
August 29, 2008
still have yet to spend an entire week in houston, i’m guessing Exxon will have something to say about that. The drive back to austin is becoming uncomfortably easy for me, literally i’m coasting in right under the 2 hours 30 minute mark (probably because the audi has given me the ability to speed uncontrollably, something white lightning did not afford me).
Quick bullets:
-i’m strongly considering pomdilly.com, what this would contain would be my blog (duh), but also give me an avenue to continue develop my java skills (which were put on hold) and delivering web apps
-I pulled a amateur christian move tonight by not fighting for a good seat during the “blessing” portion of Golley’s going away party. Needless to say i was on my feet the entire time and they are still hurting.
-The XO house is still the haven of great dinners, if i could get them to make me an offer, i would work there full time.
-Just purchased Hillsong’s live double cd set, and its awesome.
-Spike TV has been having a CSI marathon FOR THE LAST 5 DAYS. Now i am a big CSI fan (we’re talking the original, not CSI:Miami and absolutely not CSI:New York), but even i would agree this is very aggressive of Spike to run only CSI for this long. The one thing me and jared could not figure out was why isn’t there a SpikeHD??? Spike’s claim is that its a “mans channel”, but for some reason doesn’t have an HD version? The Flintstones called, they want their broadcasting back.
-My next question about Spike TV’s CSI marathon is, how does this differ from any other day? If they throw in one episode of star trek with an episode later in the night of UFC its pretty much any other night.
-A friend is writing “stuffyoungliferslike.blogspot.com”, which is a complete copy of “stufffchristianslike.blogspot.com”, which itself is a copy of “stuffwhitepeoplelike.blogspot.com”, i feel like it was my manifest destiny to write something making fun of christian quirks, and even considered stuffylerslike but it never happened.
-What has happened to movies lately???
-Death Race – this movie looks absolutely terrible, which is unfortunate because they could have tweaked it, called it “Twisted Metal” and actually based it on the video game. Man That would’ve been sweet.
-The mummy 3: Everything i hate about movies is present in this one, including Brendan Frazier, one of the more annoying actors i can think of. I can’t imagine what part of the preview made someone think “o wow, i’ll be seeing that one”
-The new season of Heroes looks really, really good. The addition of villians to the mix, sounds like a good way to mix things up.
-The worst injury you can get (besides having genitalia cut off) is a split toe nail. Walking into the house i was bending over to pick something up when our puppy (a 110lb bull mastiff) decided to come give me a nudge which caused me to kick the wooden table, thus causing me to crack my toe nail on my 3rd toe. It hurts to wear shoes, it hurts to wear shoes for a long time while standing (see above for my amateur move i pulled and now you know why it was even worse then previously described).
-Rugs really make a room.
step by step transition
August 27, 2008
I think there are certain steps that people take to place the final punctuation on their college careers and begin the next step in their lives.
The first step is shedding the email address @utexas.edu or whatever school was attended, and acquiring a new professional @gmail.com address. Does anyone else remember the days before google (yes its weird, the internet did not start with google, though google may in fact be the end of the internet the way things are going) where juno and hotmail were the hip emails? I was always kind of finicky, so i would change my email probably 30 different times. I now understand why my youth minister gave up trying to keep an email contacts list during my middle school years. I’d also like to point out that as much as i would like to battle google, they’re just too slick to not use. Gmail/gcalendar/gtalk are all pretty awesome, and the fact that gtalk is slowly becoming the professionals “aim” doesn’t hurt one bit. Facebook chat has lots to learn from google when it comes to instant messaging.
The next step in this transition actually is actually facebook related. Its the 2 second process of changing networks from (in my case) austin,tx to (also in my case) houston, tx. A seemingly small, insignificant thing that had a larger effect on me then i thought it would. It was actually hard for me to finally sack up and change it, my heart still lies in austin.
Buying Furniture – I used to think putting money into furniture was like using 20 dollars bill to keep the fire in my fireplace going, stupid. I guess that was partially true, having nice stuff in college is not a very bright idea. When I lived in my house of 14 this past year, i knew going in that anything i brought to the house would be utterly destroyed if left in “community” areas. I liked and trusted all the guys i lived with, but this phenomenon of “college males destroy everything” is just like gravity, its more of a law and less of a theory. Sure enough the couch i let stay in the tv room was in horrible shape at the end of the year, and i gave the couch to the tv room with no thoughts of actually taking it back. The vacuum i loaned to the house for cleaning when we moved in disappeared shortly thereafter, with no one taking responsibility. But those were the college days, the days of rats (funny story: After we sub leased our house to the Kappa Kappa Gammas (a sorority for my readers that aren’t greek inclined) they managed in the course of 2 months to kill EIGHT rats. hahahahahahahahahahaha), and crappy stuff. Young professionals probably won’t be living in situations as i found myself this past year, and dont have to worry if they pull the trigger on a new chair or coffee table that it’ll meet its doom 3 weeks later.
A change in identity – I found this to be particularly true last night when i met people while playing sand volleyball (one of the more underrated sports out there, gateball being the most underrated sport ever, but thats probably because gateball is a made up game that required use electrical tape to make lines in a racquetball court). It used to be, you identified yourself by what school you went to, or what major you were, or if you were in a sorority / fraternity / younglife (definitely falls into both of those categories). Now its all about what you do. Now i am Matt Adams and i work for ExxonMobil. Of course the problem i get with telling people i work at exxon, is that they give me this look like i just told them that i strangle puppies.
back from the dead
August 25, 2008
I know its been almost a full month since my last post. I actually had to check when my last post was to verify that it in fact, had almost been a month. Now that I’ve officially moved to houston (which i’ve heard is known as the san fran, greece, ny, etc, etc, of the Southeast Texas Region) i’m here by almost forced to update on a much more frequent basis as to avoid nasty confrontations with my adoring fans. All 1 of them. I could have just said adoring fan and you would have gotten the point, but i digress.
Lets do a quick recap of what has happened in the past month:
1. The Dark Knight came out and changed my life (a few days ago i was emailed a photo of a supposed photo previewing batman 3 which got me really really excited, though it was probably a fake)
2. Drove an RV (a 33 footer which i lovingly named the Dawn Treader (which nobody knew where that name came from, and i consequentially caused my faith in the generation after mine to fall to an all time low) for younglife’s freshmen trip. This could actually be a post all on its own on how younglife might be the most bootleg organization, with the right intentions mind you, but still the way they do things and operate absolutely leaves me dumbfounded. Actually i’ve been considering this issue that younglife faces for a while, “how much is too much to spend on someone’s salvation”?. The cost of younglife alone is unbelievably high, this Texas Tour trip was 260 dollars for a weekend of good ole fashioned fun, featuring one of the best unsigned artists out of Round Rock, TX (specifically the cathollow, even more specifically the adams’ residence). But that trip was increased from 99 dollars the year before, because younglife ended up paying too much out of their own pocket and wanted to push some of that cost to the attendees. So i ask, how much is too much to pay for a kid to come to know christ?
3. Attended the dave matthews concert at the woodlands pavillion, and sat closer then i do at church. Here is the thing, the concert was amazing and there is no denying that he will one day be considered a musical legend, but i do have some beef with him. First, the average dave matthews fan is probably in the 28-30 range judging from what i saw at the concert. I felt that i was definitely in the younger portion of his fans, meaning that these fans have been around and know all of his old stuff. At the concert, Dave continually force fed us his new stuff, ignoring the fact that when he did play his older (and far better) musical treats, that the crowd responded with great enthusiasm. C’mon dave, know your audience.
4. Watched the most amazing Olympics i can remember. In my very humble opinion, these olympics were far superior to the 2000 Sydney games when i watched michael johnson run wild setting WR’s in the 200 and the 400. These are better then the ‘96 atlanta games featuring Dream Team 2 (still my favorite dream team jerseys) and the bomb that went off in the olympic village. There were WAY better then the 2004 variety, which i hardly remember watching, and didn’t everyone cheat in those olympics? So back to the 2008 games a few thoughts:
- did you know michael phelps won 8 golds?
-Usain Bolt, wow. What people aren’t fully grasping, and maybe they are and i’m not talking to them (big shocker there) is that swimming and track events are usually decided in hundredths of seconds. WR’s rarely fall by more then a couple tenths of a second, and even then thats considered “smashing” a world record. So in Phelps’ case, and especially in the case of the relay in which they broke the WR by 5 seconds, i can’t fully get my mind around how extraordinary that is. That’s like Peyton Manning throwing 100 td’s next season to set the regular season mark. Its unbelievable. Second, in Bolt’s case, i really feel had he kept running the 100 rather then pulling up to a jog for the last 25 meters that he could’ve run a 9.59. SUB 9.6!! Part of me is sad he didn’t try for it, but an equal part is happy that he raced it exactly like he did and flaunted how much better he was. He didn’t do an NFL wide receiver -esque crappy dance or anything after the 100, he just flexed on the competition mid race. No big.
-its amazing what the fear of being executed will enable you to do. Yes i’m referring to the opening ceremonies and those chinese “volunteers” who made that phenomenal circle. People think i’m kidding about the execution thing, but i’m not.
-Of course those Chinese Gymnasts had legal passports verifying their age, THE GOVERNMENT MADE THEM. Thats the part the absolutely baffles me, a government controlled document isn’t any good when the government is the one who is behind the cheating in the first place.
-India where you at? 1.3 billion people and you managed like 6 medals? Kenya averaged like 3.3 medals PER athlete. You would think with that many people to choose from that India would be one of the stronger countries in the olympics.
-I heard china “paid” (see also: “threatened to execute”) citizens to attend the lesser events to make china appear to be a great host nation.
-The lone afghan woman competing in the olympics disappeared when their plane landed en route to china and is reportedly seeking asylum. What are the odds there will never be another female afghan athlete given permission to leave the country?
-I dont feel “Redeemed” by USA basketball.
-Was Carmelo Anthony high during his entire stay in China, or just for the interviews?
5. Moved to Houston – yes its a sad day, but i did get to experience the greatest thing ever. Movers. Exxon graciously hired movers to come and pickup all of my stuff (and a lot of my sisters stuff) and move it to the new pad in the central part of houston. They wrapped up everything, and i mean everything. I was given very detailed instructions to not pack anything, including clothes because the movers would do it. Very underrated. So yea i dont start work for a few weeks and i’m working feverishly to get the house ready to be lived in, including painting and building closets and replacing sinks etc etc etc.
